AS SOON AS HE HEARD THE front door click shut, Mike sat up. He’d wanted to roll over and hold her from the moment the change in her breathing had told him she was awake. He hadn’t, though. Something in the way she moved had urged him to keep still. A tiny voice in his head telling him that this wasn’t the time to press.
Mike had listened to that voice, and he could only hope that it was the angel on his shoulder doing the talking…and not the devil. Because right now, Mike was operating on faith alone. He’d let her walk out even though he was pretty damn certain she was suffering from morning-after regret. If that regret festered—if it lodged in her heart and destroyed any chance he might have of building on the intense attraction between them—well, then Mike was pretty sure he’d have to throttle the source of that little voice. Even if the source was himself. With a sigh, he rolled over, his hand sweeping the left side of the bed where she’d curled up during the night. In sleep, she’d clung to him, one arm draped across his chest, her fingers gently curled around his arm. Casual and yet possessive. And he recalled with detailed precision the way she’d clung to him when he’d shifted even slightly. His heart had about burst then, and he’d stayed in bed, ignoring the urge for a glass of water, and wanting to comfort her, even if only in sleep.
Not that there had been all that much sleep when you got right down to it. In actual fact, sleep had been far from it, he thought, as he swung his legs over the side of the bed and sat up. From the first moment his lips had touched hers, Mike had felt as though he could never sleep again. Or eat, for that matter. Why would he have to, when this woman filled him and rejuvenated him? She set him on fire, burned her way through him, and burst him back into life, as jubilant as a phoenix.
He rubbed his hands over his face, shaking his head slightly, amused at his sudden burst of literary license. He couldn’t help the way he felt, though. Even before he’d touched her, he’d known. There was just something about Mattie Brown that called to him. And it wasn’t simply the fact that she looked damn good in a pair of Levi’s, the loose waves of her hair falling over her green eyes as she’d watched him assemble her cabinet. The way her breasts had strained against the threadbare top of the battered bathing suit he’d found her in on Saturday.
Oh, yes. She looked good, all right. But his attraction stemmed from someplace deeper. If he wanted to be literary again—and he really didn’t—he’d say that their souls had connected. Undoubtedly, something had connected, because Mike had never felt more at home—more perfect—than he had when he’d made love to her.
Even now, when she was no longer in touching distance, he could remember the way she’d felt.
